Dr Djordje Stefanovic (Saint Mary’s University) and Dr Neophytos Loizides (University of Kent) received a grant of 40,796 CAD from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for their project The Way Home: Peaceful Return of Victims of Displacement. Conventional wisdom assumes that victims of displacement are less and less likely to return to their former homes with the passage of time, especially if they achieve similar or better standards of living in a secure environment next to co-ethnics or in the diaspora. Yet some refugees and displaced persons with extensive experience of conflict and dislocation decide voluntarily to return home despite conditions that seem prohibitive. The project examines how displaced persons do so successfully without reigniting violent conflict. For the purpose of the SSHRC project Dr Stefanovic and Dr Loizides will rely on qualitative interviews and large-n surveys among displaced persons and returnees in Bosnia and the Kurdish regions of Turkey. Infodemy has contributed to the qualitative interviews for this project and into identifying returnees for the large-n survey.
